Sennheiser HD202 Closed DJ-Monitoring Headphones (inc windup belt clip)
Finding a good sounding sealed headphone is difficult, finding a cheap sealed headphone that sounds tolerable is almost impossible. Almost, because the 202 is way tolerable compared to others near this price. Though they do exhibit the typical (for inexpensive cans) “honkiness” in the mids, this flaw is quite modest. Like other sealed headphones in this price range, these cans are great for keeping the kids’ video game music out of the way or for keeping the dormmate noise at bay.
The HD 202 use a sealed, almost-circumaural headphone design. They have small, circular, velour earpads that almost surround the ears, but are not quite large enough to prevent the flat part of the earpads from resting gently on the ears. The result is a set of headphones that have the light weight and small size of a supra-aural design, but have the secure fit and comfort of a circumaural model.
The HD 202 are black in color and use a very simple three-piece design consisting of the two earpieces and the headband. The earpieces attach via small, ball-like protrusions that ride in a groove in the headband; the detents in this groove allow you to adjust the fit. This arrangement also allows you to un-snap the earpieces from the headband for compact storage or traveling purposes, although too much disassembly could cause premature wear on the grooved detents. The cable is approximately a three meter long Y-type, which attaches to both earpieces via 1/8" mono plugs whose bodies fit tightly into a hole in each earpiece —- a very nice bit of engineering for a difficult problem. At the other end, the cable is terminated with a 1/8" mini-plug (a 1/8” to ¼” adapter is included).
