Wave Panel Wave Frame

Wave Panel Wave Frame

Wave Frames are a clever combination of elements brought together to make a simple and attractive looking solution to acoustic control. By using sculpted acoustic foam for immediate midrange and treble absorption, a limp-mass resonator is added to act on the lower frequencies. Both elements are then suspended inside an attractive looking frame that can be hung like a picture. This suspended type of mounting allows for an air gap between the resonator, foam and the wall. This gap allows any sound energy passing through the resonator to effectively become phase reversed. So that by the time the sound is then reflected back off the wall, the colliding waveforms will become attenuated or even cancelled entirely. In addition, the acoustic foam can be flocked in a range of attractive colors. Flocking is essentially a coating of tiny nylon fibres that gives the tile an upholstered velvet like finish.

  • Additional Information:
Polyurethane foam has for many years been a popular and cost effective way in treating the acoustics of a room. It is typically applied directly onto to the wall or ceiling where it will reduce reverberation, flutter echoes and reflections. But as any acoustician will tell you, in most cases, this is only a partial solution. The greatest challenge is bringing the bass region to heel. To accurately judge how much real bass is actually in the equation during recording or mixdown, is what can screw up a mixdown pretty quickly. And while applying 1 inch polyurethane foam flat to the walls will help with some of the imaging and reverberation, it won’t do much for getting the bass right. An old trick employed by acousticians has been to leave an air gap between the acoustic material and the wall. Whatever remaining wave energy passes through the trap the first time around will reflect off the wall and be dealt with a second time. An air gap of only an inch or so can dramatically increase the trap’s efficiency. In technical terms, it means you are widening the trap’s Q and increasing its absorption coefficient. In other words, widening the traps effective frequency range and generally soaking up more sound. And it doesn’t stop there. To further improve on these factors, the foam tiles can be glued onto a limp-mass resonator and then applied using the same air-gap method. A limp-mass resonator is essentially a diaphragm that is light enough to be excited by sound waves, dense enough to attenuate the energy and all without generating a sound of its own. Using this formula, an even wider spectrum of sound is absorbed and whatever sound does pass through to reflect off the wall or ceiling becomes phase reversed. As anyone with a basic understanding of physics will know, when a sound wave is confronted by an identical sound wave of opposite polarity, it cancels itself out. The result then is superb sound absorption with a wide Q. Your loudspeakers will sound like you’ve never heard them before. Using these basic concepts, we’ve created an acoustic trap that not only has an extremely wide Q with an impressive absorption coefficient, but is also visually striking to look at.
